6 Minute Walk for Breathe
Thursday, November 28, 2013 9:30am-12:30pm
BWG Leisure Centre
471 W Park Ave, Bradford West Gwillimbury, ON L3Z 0J2

The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is an easy to perform and practical test that is used in the assessment of patients with a variety of cardiopulmonary diseases including pulmonary hypertension. It simply measures the distance that a patient can walk on a flat, hard surface during a period of six minutes. The test is “self-paced”, where patients select their own level of intensity, which helps to more accurately reflect “everyday activities” for each particular person.

All are invited to come out and join us for this short walk that will help educate the public about the challenges faced by those living with PH while raising funds to support the programs and services offered by PHA Canada. Come out and walk with us or just to support the other walkers!

City of Toronto Proclamation 2013

Pulmonary Hypertension Month

November 2013

WHEREAS pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare, life-threatening disease that affects the arteries of the lungs. It can strike people of any gender , age or cultural background.

Pulmonary hypertension is as a result of high blood pressure in the lungs that causes the arteries to narrow and shut, almost completely. People with PH can suffer from enlarged hearts and eventual heart failure.

Patients with PH tend to experience symptoms associated with aging, such as shortness of breath, fatigue and swollen ankles and symptoms can easily be misdiagnosed, leading to delays in treatment.

The Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada, Toronto Chapter, is a volunteer group made up of patients, families and caregivers. It is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with Pulmonary Hypertension through advocacy, awareness, support and education.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rob Ford, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim November 2013 as “Pulmonary Hypertension Month” in the City of Toronto.
