June 9, 2018 – 5th Annual Run/Walk for PH Research!

ajx2018
PHA Canada Run/Walk for PH Research
Saturday June 9, 2018 9:00AM
Ajax Waterfront Trail

The Fifth Annual PHA Canada Run/Walk for Research is on Saturday June 9, 2018, with registration beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the run/walk starting at 9:30 a.m. We will be hosting the event on the Ajax Waterfront Trail again, starting and ending at Rotary Park. Last year we had 132 participants join us and were able to raise $19,605! This year is especially important, as it marks the 10 year anniversary of PHA Canada and the five year anniversary of our run/walk. We are hoping this year’s event will be just as successful!

Joseph and Renae host this event every summer in honour of their mom Judy, who was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (IPAH) 9 years ago. IPAH is when the arteries of the lungs become narrowed, making it more difficult for the heart to pump blood forward through the lungs. This places great stress on the heart and leads to enlargement of the heart. There is no known cause for the disease. Some symptoms of IPAH include shortness of breath that worsens with physical activity, cough, fatigue, dizziness, retention of fluid resulting in swollen legs, feet and hands, chest pain and heart failure. Statistics show survival of about three years if the disease goes untreated. 50% of patients survive five years or more from diagnosis. IPAH is a debilitating, life-threatening illness with no cure. Now, our mom is in the process of preparing herself for a lung transplant, and it is even more important for us to raise funds for the next Mohammed Family Research Scholarship.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could seek sponsorship to participate in this event – every little bit counts! Tax receipts can be provided, if requested, for sponsorships exceeding $20, as long as the name, address and phone number of the sponsor is provided. Cheques are payable to PHA Canada. The registration fee for this event is $10, however, this will be waived if you are able to raise over $15! When you arrive at the run/walk with your sponsor sheet and collected funds, you will be entered into a draw for some prizes! THE FIRST 50 PEOPLE TO REGISTER WHO HAVE RAISED $200 OR MORE WILL RECEIVE A SPECIAL GIFT. The run/walk will take place, rain or shine, and refreshments will be provided for you after you have completed the 5K. If you know someone who would like to participate with you in this event, all are welcome – please let us know in advance so we can accommodate them with regards to the permit and refreshments. Attached is a pledge form. Please RSVP no later than June 2. Thank you and we hope you can make it!

If you are unable to attend the event, but would still like to donate to PHA Canada, you can do so here. You can also set up a place for your pledges online here: http://www.phacanada.ca/6minutesajax

November 2017 – Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month

lifeinpurple

November is Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month!

Celebrated annually throughout the month of November, PH Awareness Month is an international event that raises awareness of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Every November, people living with PH worldwide, along with their loved ones and care providers, unite to raise awareness of the disease and the need for earlier diagnosis, more effective and accessible treatments, and—ultimately—a cure.

This PH Awareness Month, we challenge you to take the Life in Purple Challenge to help raise #PHAwareness and funds for PHA Canada. If together we raise a minimum of $3,000 between November 01st and December 31st, our PHriends at McKesson Canada will double our efforts with a matching donation!

If you live with PH – or help care for someone who has PH – you know first hand how the disease can impact every aspect of life. Raise #PHAwareness all month by sharing parts of your Life in Purple story. Use the tools below to post stories, comments, photos, and videos about the impact PH has on your life. Share your posts with your networks on social media to help your friends and family better understand what it means to live with PH. Tag your post with #LifeInPurpleChallenge to be included in the national conversation!

Friday, May 5, 2017 marks the 6th annual World PH Day. This year again, PHA Canada will celebrate and spread awareness of PH by illuminating several Canadian Monuments in Purple.

In 2014, 2015, and 2016, thanks to the efforts of members of our community, monuments have been illuminated in periwinkle on May 5th from shore to shore including landmarks such as: BC Place, Vancouver; Calgary Tower, Calgary; High Level Bridge, Edmonton; CN Tower, Toronto; Niagara Falls, Niagara; Ottawa Heritage Building, Ottawa; and Olympic Tower, Montreal!
